Big day on The Hill for the Vols with 52-14 win over Ole Miss
Nov. 13 - The University of Tennessee Volunteers picked up their first SEC victory and their fourth win of the season Saturday taking it to the Ole Miss Rebels 52-14 on Home-Coming Saturday.
It is the most points the Volunteers have put on the board since 2003 when they defeated Mississippi State 59-21.
The win keeps Tennes-see’s hopes alive of qualify-ing for a bowl with Vander-bilt and Kentucky remaining.
Mississippi brought the second ranked ground game in the SEC and 13th in the nation into the match up. But Tennessee’s defense was stubborn from the opening kick off and the Vol’s offense poured on the points forcing the Rebels to look to a pass-ing game that proved inef-fective.
“It’s great to get and SEC win but it’s two late in the season to get it,” Coach Derrick Dooley said follow-ing the game. “I told them that a good team creates its own luck and we got lucky in our opening possession when Tyler Bray’s pass to Gerald Jones was deflected and Justin Hunter got under it and took it 80 yards for a touch down.” “I knew at half time the third quarter was critical,” added Dooley. “We got enough points on the board they had to throw more than they like. We did a good job keep (Jeremiah) Mosili in the pocket. I say it every week, turnovers are the key and we forced five of them.”
“Mississippi has a good defensive front and we knew it was going to be tough to run much so we stayed with our passing game. Later on we were able to run the ball a little better.”
“Tyler Bray had a good game - he made some mis-takes and needs to keep improving and I’m sure he will,” Dooley continued. “That’s what you want, to get better and better and better. We handled adversity. We were two and six coming off two blowouts. Now we’ll see if we can handle two good games.”
The Vols were on the R
ebels quickly up 21-0 in the first quarter. First in their opening series as Justin Hunter took a deflection 80 yards with 12:27 on the clock. With 3:53 Bray hit Denarius Moore from 17 yards out. The following series Eric Gordon picked off Mosili and went 46 yards for the score.
Early in the second quarter the Rebels went 72 yards in seven plays and Brandon Bolden took it in from the 17-yard line. With 6:35 Tennes-see answered as Bray hit Justin Hunter from 22 yards out capping off an 11-play 86 yard drive. With 1:54 remaining in the first half Mississippi found their final score of the day as Brandon Bolden pushed it in from the 2-yard line. Daniel Lincoln split the up rights with :56 seconds in the second quarter from 43 yards out putting the Vols up 31-14 at the half.
With 11:46 in the third pe-riod Vol Prentiss Waggner intercepted Mosili on at the Rebels 10-yard line and scored. Tauren Poole broke loose for a 36-yard romp putting Tennessee up 45-14 at the end of the third quarter.
The final score of the day came with 8:46 in the fourth quarter when Poole went on his second scoring romp of the day – this time from 35 yards out. Daniel Lincoln was 6 0f 6 on PAT’s and had a 43 yard field goal.
Tennessee finished with 441 yards of offense with Bray completing 18 of 34 for 323 yards. UT played the 60 minutes without a turnover. The Volunteer defense gave up 295 yards giving up 196 on the ground and 99 in the air. Ole Miss finished with 5 turn over's total – two were interceptions for touch-downs.
