Falcons drop O/T battle with Patriots

Lincoln County High School's Falcons took a tough region overtime loss Friday night at home to Page, 28-21. LCHS controlled the game dominating the Patriots in every aspect but one, special teams.

Defensibly the Falcons held the Patriots to 107 total yards while the offense pounded out 295 yards. But two breakdowns on special teams decided the victor - a 65 yard punt return for a score and a blocked punt that set up a Patriots touch down. That 14 point swing was the difference in the game.

"We've had a couple of game where the score wasn't indicative of a big fight but I felt like all through the year we've been learning and getting better," Coach Tim Johnson said. "I keep telling the guys we're just a hair away from flipping this thing and putting together a string of win."

"We want to wear down people at the end of the day," Johnson said. "We've got good running backs and a offensive line, even though were young they coming along. But at the end of the day we made a couple special team mistakes that was the difference in the game."

"When you've got a running game that puts up that many yards you know there's something good going on up front," he added. "I'm sure we were out manned up front but our kids fought they tails off and I'm proud of the way they represented our team, school and community tonight."

In the first quarter the Falcon defense held the Patriots to no first downs but at the 1:48 mark in the period Page got on the board on a 65 yard punt return followed by a good PAT. At the end of one LCHS trailed 7-0.

In the second frame the LCHS defense made a stand on a 4th and nine situation taking over on downs at their own 25 yard line. The Falcons followed with a couple first downs including a 46 yard run by West Jenkins who took Lincoln Co. to the one-yard-line. At the 1:28 mark Jake Sorrells pushed it in for the score and Reid Hardin was good on the PAT. It was knotted at 7-7 at the half.

The Falcons regained the lead late in the third period scoring on a nine play drive their started at the Patriots 42 yard line. Jacob Sorrells connected with Tucker Webb from the five for the score. Reid Hardin was good on the PAT and LCHS was up 14-7 headed to the fourth.

But the advantage was short lived. With 10:25 on the clock the Patriots knotted it at 14-14 with the help of a pass interference call in the end zone. Page took it in from the 10 yard line for the score followed with a good PAT.

In their following possession the Falcons had a punt blocked that gave the Patriots field position at the LCHS 20 yard line. Four plays later Page scored from the 3-yard-line followed with a good PAT. With 5:54 LCHS trailed 21-14.

But the excitement was far from over. In the following possession the Falcon started at their own 24-yard-line. Thirteen plays later West Jenkins pushed it in from the one; Reid Hardin was good on the PAT. With 43 seconds remaining in the game it was knotted at 21-21.

On the following kick off the Falcons executed a successful on side kick that game them possession at mid field but LCHS didn't have time in regulation to capitalize - it was headed to overtime.

In high school football both teams have a possession starting at the 10 yard line. The Patriots had the first possession and hit pay dirt in the air on their first attempt. The PAT was good and LCHS trailed 28-21.

The Falcons ran four plays, two on the ground and two in the air in their overtime possession but failed to find the end zone. The Patriots had the win, 28-21.
